Analysis of Final Opening Sequence

Genre Conventions: The genre of the film is fantasy. The setting for the sequence is primarily in a forest-like area, a typical location for a fantasy. The music for the opening sequence is also typical of the genre as it is 'mystical sounding' and creates a magical atmosphere. The old man character is typical of a mysterious character that is often found within the fantasy genre. The cape makes him more mysterious. The fact that his face is never seen adds to this.

Quality of Filming and Editing: The editing of the opening sequence is fluid and consistent. The sequence makes chronological sense and isn't difficult to understand. The colour correction filter also changes the atmosphere slightly in the film. The filming process was effective as we took multiple shots of the same scene to ensure we would actually have a scene to work from and more choice to do so. The shots have different angles of which some work and some do not.

Music and Image: The music used in the film is made to fit the sequence as best as possible. It is also made to reflect the genre of fantasy and the pace of the sequence.

Mise En Scene: The atmosphere of the sequence is brought out more so by the colour filter that has been added onto it. The establishing shots of the area show the setting of the film. The clothing worn by the old man show that it is clearly a low budget, amateur film. The angles used are important to the film as they never show the man's face adding to the mystery of the film.

Effective Opening Sequence: The opening sequence makes he viewer want to watch on to find out what will happen between the old man and a young boy. It also tells who made the film by use of the intro credits.

Review of Filming Process and Editing Choices

Filming Process
Successes: We were able to film on location straight away without any problems as to where we would film due to the test shots we did.

We had no problems with time management as we used our time effectively and stuck to our filming plan.

Hurdles: Trying to film the 'forest' without showing cars in the background was a problem.

Finding a way to make an 'old man'. Done with a curtain and a hoodie.

Acting difficulties. (Inexperience)

Missing a group member.

Editing Choices
We decided to do a dual narrative and to show this we cut between the young boy and the old man to show that they were happening at the same time.

The colour correction filters change the atmosphere and make the colours look less washed out.

The titles at the beginning fit in with the style of film. The other titles explain who would be in it.

Costume and Props

A list of the costumes and props needed for the Childrens film.

For the Old Man:

A hooded cloak. - this means we can give the appearance of an old man without having to show his face.

Grey T-Shirt - Doesn't distract the viewer from the cloak too much.

Formal Shoes - Again, doesn't distract the viewer from the rest of the clothing. Doesn't look too out of place.

A Jewel - Some for of jewel/gem to be used as the magical item. Possibly green or purple.

For the boy:
T-shirt - Typical teenager clothing. Obvious student.

Jeans - Typical teenager clothing.

Hoodie - Typical teenager clothing.

Trainers -Typical teenager shoes.

The school bell rings and a young boy walks out into the grounds of the school. At the same time, an old man is walking in the woods.

The boy apparently begins to walk home – we see him walk around the school and out into the woods.

The old man is lurking in the woods.

The boy is walking around in the wood, making his way home. Something distracts him and he beings to stray onto an unfamiliar path.

The old man steps out onto the path in front of the boy, blocking his way forward.
